Tween Books About Survival

I recently had a 7th grader request some good survival themed books. He already read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and enjoyed that type of ‘use your knowledge’ to survive themed book.

I had to do a little digging, using databases such as NoveList and booklists from CCBC & Books for Boys.  After some searching, I was able to find some great tween survival books with protagonists aged 9-13.  Each of these titles links out to a review of the book located on either  a book list site or a newspaper book review.

Shipwrecked! The True Adventures of a Japanese Boy by Rhoda Blumberg. (9 year old protagonist Manjiro Nakahama).

Brian’s Winter by Gary Paulsen:  (13 year old protagonist Brian Robeson)

A Girl Named Disaster by Nancy Farmer (11 year old protagonist Nhamo)

Alabama Moon by Watt Key (10 year old protagonist Moon Blake)
Raptor by Paul Zindel (Teenage protagonist Zack)
